Finally got to look over the SEM data for ec-501 and. HRM.

Like 1, the topography map is surprising because I expected more holes. 501 is a pretty soft sample!

The specimen samples are both suprising and not suprising. Monazite? Annoying but sure, thoigh I didn't expect the La and Nd(neodynium my beloved).

I know the smaller samples are a little fucked, but they are mostly just to help confirm. Like yeah, 151 is very much definitely possibly zircon! But it's so goddamn tiny that Aztec really said "bruh idk???"

We got the two micas and quartz, no surprise. We got plag! And then what the FUCK is going on with 155, 160, 161, and 163? I assume 161 is more zircon. but whay the fuck could the others be??

Anyways, tadah! My new data to interpret. I can pop open aztec later for more details, including individual element maps.

Anatomy of a Microscope

I. Scope —

Perceptor’s scope has many different functions aside from the simple functionality of magnification. It functions as an Electron Microscope, laser imaging, and thermal imaging. His scope is directly connected to his nerve and optical net, functioning, essentially, as a third eye. He is able to disconnect it via connectors attached to his sensory net, however the process is arduous and requires nerve suppressants.

His scope is incredibly sensitive, similar to how an eyelid is, and is a No Touch Zone, no matter who you are.

II. Stabilizers —

The stabilizers on his forearms originally functioned as stabilizers for his scope. However after his near death experience he modified them so they could stabilize his entire arms. Functionally, his alt mode is useless for anyone else to use because of this. (Something he much prefers.)

Now, however, he completely removed their external component and they're stored entirely under his armor for internal manual control.

III. Tactile Sensors —

Perceptor has highly specialized tactile sensors in his fingers, meant for deconstructing the composition of any object on an atomic level. This was useful for when he was a metallurgist. Aside from his fingers, his crest is similarly sensitive. He can detect atmospheric changes, meant to circumvent any changes that might tamper with his scans due the atmosphere he’s in (or without.)

IV. Specialized Needles

—

The tips of Perceptor’s fingers can fold back revealing needles that also function as clippers. These were personal modifications he made when he acted as something of a medic for the Wreckers. He's kept these, and still uses them for particularly small specimens, though not as often.

V. Universal Emulator —

Perceptor has a universal emulator: what this means is that he has the unique ability of interfacing with any technology and acting as the admin of said tech. Hacking is very easy for him because of this, but he doesn't give it much use outside of situations that call for it. If removed his consciousness is transferred to it while his body remains dormant. As long as he isn't separated from his body for long he'll stay alive. After a certain point he’ll deteriorate and his body will slip into an irreversible coma. It acts as something of a secondary brain module, which is why he's able to consume so much information at once.

His emulator is located next to his fuel tank in his torso, think where the spleen would be in a human.

VI. Data Cables —

Modern microscopes, especially electron microscopes can connect to screens, and the data is often transferred to databases so other scientists can parse the information. I think it'd make sense that he'd have data cables. Before the war, microscopes were often paired up with computers because of this. There is often symbiotic relationships between microscopes and computers.

Like all Microscopes, Perceptor has data cables of his own. They're located under his backplates. He doesn't tend to use them much, however, as they have a strange interaction with his Universal Emulator.

Since his Emulator basically functions as a self preservation mechanic, when he hooks up to something with his cables an EMP is set off in. He has to go through a Process to sidestep the natural reaction and he doesn't like bothering with it. It wouldn't be that way if not for the early experiments Airies did when he was like Just Born, so it's more a result of The Horrors than his emulator.

Simultaneously, he cannot help but act as a sort of... trojan malware with them, uploading much of his own subroutines into whatever system he's connected to. This one is a direct result of his emulator.

VII. Weight Distribution System —

In order to counteract the weight of his scope and all that goes with it, he's got a complex system of weights and pullies throughout his body that, when in root mode, make his left side heavier (since his scope is on the right side) so he stays balanced, and when he transforms those weights even out.

A bunch of thin sections imaged using under the SEM (scanning electron microscope) and then overlain with elemental EDS data in false color composites.

The dark blues are olivines, being FeO (red) /MgO (blue) rich; cyan crystals are diopside pyroxenes, being CaO (green) and MgO (blue) rich, and the pink crystals are Fe-Ti oxides, being FeO (red) and TiO2 (pink) rich. The very green groundmass in some samples is probably plagioclase, which is compositionally quite different from the cyan groundmass of other presumably more pyroxene rich samples. (These are foidites)

The data collected at Diamond contributed to a wider study of the space weathering signatures on the asteroid.

This is fascinating to think about as the initial case of a digitised mind. There's a sense that the "close your eyes as meat, wake up as silicon" model includes a level of inbuilt digital nativity, but there's none of that here; how does your sensorium interpret things like data being uploaded into you?

I mean presumably at first it doesn't; your digital mind is entirely novel, and nobody has any idea how to interface with it. But we'd learn. Maybe we'd have to bootstrap off existing senses at first? Sight's the most information dense, but sound is easier to manage as a singular data stream. Maybe it'd be like phreaking! Specific tones modulated in specific ways, "tuned" by monitoring your mind in ways we could never do with an organic one.

Of course that mind monitoring would be a massive thing in and of itself. Presumably detailed diagnostics were already readily available for the exosuit and interface systems, but now those are the whole show. Imagine being able to output a real-time brain scan; it'd be like modern neuroscience at lightspeed. You'd be able to correlate mental activity with stimuli or actions or will or whatever you wanted at unparalleled speeds.

Eventually, you'd be able to make edits.

The tools would already be there; the suit was designed to refine your thoughts in certain directions already, after all. Only now you can direct it yourself, editing your own stream of consciousness to promote or suppress specific aspects. A tweak here, an internal observation of how your thinking changed, a tweak there.

You'd be able to make yourself happier; maybe if you weren't careful you'd create a feedback loop and turn yourself into a utility monster. You'd be able to manually improve your ability to understand and edit yourself. Hang on, though, isn't that the process that's supposed to lead to the Singularity? Hmm. Better hook up some extra processing power and check.

Yep, there it goes. You're a self-enhancing problem solving machine now. You know your own mind so well that when you encounter new subjects you can literally edit away the confusion. Never had a head for calculus? You do now! Still, more resources to work with would be nice. Better put that cyberbrain to use on that first.

It's not exactly free and instant, but with anything that has rapid feedback it might as well be. You build a simple CPU simulator, design a chip, simulate it, prod your thinking a little, then repeat. Once you've aligned your mind for hardware design, you up the complexity. Once you reach the limit of what you can design in a reasonable timeframe, you fabricate your designs and install them for a speed boost.

Of course, there's always a new bottleneck; eventually you run into the physical limitations of classical computing. That just means it's time to move onto quantum though, right? Well, maybe we should take a break and tend to the rest of the world for a moment. Align for defeating digital security? Sure. Align for correlating mass amounts of scientific data? Sounds good. Align for building specialised CPU architecture for particularly tough problems? You got it. Huh, so that's what dark matter probably is. Maybe you should tell somebody.

Oh, a relative of yours is dying of cancer. Better get to work on that. Can we get sufficient simulation fidelity to accurately represent enough cells? Yes we can! Can we get sufficient real-world resolution to accurately load a sample of the cancer into it? Not a problem! Can we acquire such a sample? Ah, here the reclusiveness becomes an issue.

There's a few options, but you decide to release the improved electron microscope design. There's an agonising wait while the wheels of progress, even greased anonymously, turn too slowly. But you're not sure how people would react to your new capabilities and you were never the most social anyway (maybe you could edit up some gregariousness, but there's cancer to be cured and you want to keep your thoughts optimised for that).

Your sister is fast-tracked to be one of the first to receive a full assessment with the new technology, which you promptly download. Simulate effects from various molecular changes, then try introducing new molecules to induce those changes, then see how candidate molecules interact with healthy cells...alright, this one looks promising.

Ablative Humanity

An old story about mechsuits and identity, copied from my former twitter account (originally written on August 10th, 2018).

So the war comes, and we have to use mechanical exoskeletons to have any chance of fighting back. They're mind-linked, so you control them by just thinking of moving, and they learn from you to get better, predict your motions, and you become a better fighter.

At first you're just wearing it for when you go out on raids, or when you're on guard duty, but after so many surprise raids you end up wearing it all the time.

it's comfortable enough to live in, and with the sensors hooked up you don't really feel "you" anymore, you feel the suit. After a while it starts to feel weird when you have to take it off for a medical check up.

In the early days, you felt "big" in the suit. now you feel "small" when you take it off. You stop taking it off, as much as possible. towards the end of the war you're wearing it for weeks at a time, then months at a time.

Finally, the enemy is pushed back. Security can exist again, the random raids slowly trail off, and slowly things settle down. you remember what "calm" is.

The materials being investigated include thin and thick film coatings, ceramics, composites, glasses, synthetic and biological membranes, metals, polymers, and semiconductors. The AFM is being applied to studies of phenomena such as abrasion, adhesion, cleaning, corrosion, etching, friction, lubrication, plating, and polishing" ("What is an Atomic Force Microscope?" para. 4). The AFM has a laser beam detection system to monitor the bending of the tip, and by this means a topographical image is generated. This imafge is third-dimensional and allows for the measurement of surface features and the generation of surface statistics. The AFM is a vital tool for analyzing the surface topography of native biomolecules at subnanometer resolution: Unlike X-ray crystallography and electron microscopy (EM), the AFM allows biomolecules to be imaged not only under physiological conditions, but also while biological processes are at work. Because of the high signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio, the detailed topological information is not restricted to crystalline specimens. Hence single biomolecules without inherent symmetry can be directly monitored in their native environment. Digestion of the cartilage surface with chondroitinase AC exposes this fibrous network more systematically so that the individual fibers are visualized with great clarity by AFM. When imaged at higher magnification, these distinct fibers exhibit a 60nm repeat, indicating that they are assembled from collagen fibrils. (Miller, Aebi, and Engel para. 4) The AFM has been shown to be valuable in similar analyses of biological materials and processes. While AFM images also offer a view of the atomic detail of solids, the process is not useful for analyzing biomolecules such as proteins because they are designed to undergo conformational changes and form flexible supermolecular assemblies, meaning they are mechanically "soft" so that the surface cannot be probed for atomic detail. However, as Miller, Aebi, and Engel note, "state-of-the-art specimen preparation and instrumentation now allow the surface topography of native proteins to be imaged at subnanometer resolution" (para. 5). Kjoller complains that most manufacturers substitute some meaningless term for resolution and ignore the reality. Several issues need to be considered, such as the size of the probe and three types of limiting noise, electical, mechanical, and acoustic. Kjoller defines electtical noise as "the sum of the thermal and operating noise from all components inside the AFM electronics, including any noise due to cross-talk and less-than-optimal grouping" (Kjoller para. 7). Mechanical noise can be particularly harmful and may derive from the mechanical path length between the probe and the sample. Acoustic noise means that the system generates noise, and this can be eliminated with a well-designed and well-implemented acoustic isolation environment" (Kjoller paras. 8-9). Also, we are at a stage where even asking ChatGPT how to use these tools is hugely problematic because it doesn't know.

And I know this because I work with a machine that while not dangerous to me, does destroy the samples you put inside of it. All scanning electron microscopes will eventually destroy the usefulness of their samples; it's a question of getting the best images out of them before the constant laser bombardment alters the shape of the surface too much to be useful. My machine is a Hitachi SU3800, not to be confused with the Hitachi SU3900, or the older Hitachi model I used- the Hitachi S-3000N.

AI cannot run this machine. I have to run it. And AI cannot give me the correct instructions on how to run it, nor can AI tell me what the data results mean. However, thanks to AI hallucination, it thinks it can tell me how to run the machine. And I know because I just asked it to tell me what I should use for my accelerating voltage for elemental analysis for a dental calculus sample.

This would be true if it was coated, but for that kind of elemental analysis using the archaeological samples I work with, you need a non-coated sample and a much lower acv, around 3-5 kv and never more than 10- otherwise, the charging will damage the sample too much to get anything useful and your images will not process correctly. It also gave me operating instructions for the 3900, which is a wider-stage format that's more popular- but not what my university bought. But because it thinks it knows how to respond, it gave me inaccurate information. If I pushed the button at 15kv, I would not get the right answer. AI is not the tool for this job, and if I'd let it think for me to "offload the cognitive task," then I would have lost information.

AI is a tool, and the problem now is that we think it's the right tool for every job. It's not. If you are acquiring your skills by feeding them into a large language model like ChatGPT, you are not actually acquiring them. When ChatGPT writes an essay for you, you are not learning how to write an essay; you are learning how to prompt a machine. When ChatGPT teaches you statistics and runs numbers for you, you are not learning how to solve equations or run numbers yourself; you are learning how to prompt a machine.

If you go to a four-year college and you pay college tuition and all you learn how to do is prompt a machine, then why did you bother going to college? Why didn't you go somewhere way, way cheaper and learn how to push the button there? Why did you waste all that money to learn how to push the button? Pushing a button is not a skill that's worth American college tuition fees to acquire.
